1)What is the feeling rule that Candace Clarke discovered? What is the deep story that Arlie Hocschild discovered? Once you explain this, give an example of a study you could conduct (referring the activity in the lecture notes for instructions) to find out a feeling rule or a deep for a particular group or subgroup in our culture. Use Clarke and Hocschild’s research as your model.

We have looked at how shame can work to police people and also at some methods of understanding emotions. We will not move on to look specifically at the social constructionist approach to studying emotions in detail for both this week and the following week. But now let’s discuss the reading…Check out the two accounts below. Both are about the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of a drug overdose a few years ago. Can you guess (before looking!) how these two accounts of his death relate to the reading for this week?“Despite his wife’s exasperated separation due to his drug use and recent neglectful behavior while visiting his children, Philip Seymour Hoffman embraced the celebrity drug lifestyle, choosing to return to heroine again and again over the last 20 years. When he was found dead, massive amounts of the drug, which police say was evidence of Hoffman’s pre-meditated plans for a long binge, were found in his home.”  VERSUS“After many years of bitter struggle against the crippling disease of heroin addiction and numerous attempts at rehab, beloved actor and cherished family man Philip Seymour Hoffman lost the battle and tragically died of an overdose.”while visiting his children, Philip Seymour Hoffman embraced the celebrity drug lifestyle, choosing to return to heroine again and again over the last 20 years.
